How to turn a weekly meal plan into one grocery list

A weekly meal plan helps only if it becomes one grocery list. In a meal planning app, choose the recipes for the week, rebuild the list from those meals, and shop once with ingredients grouped by grocery department instead of starting a new list every night.

A plan that never becomes a list

A calendar of dinners does not tell you that three recipes need lemons, or that the tortillas are already in the pantry. You either retype every ingredient or you walk the store with a pile of tabs. The missing step is a grocery list from recipes, not another note that says "tacos, soup, pasta."

Fill the week from recipes you already have

Open the weekly meal plan in The Recipe Book and add recipes from your library to a day. Slots are breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack. You are planning food you can actually cook, including recipes imported from links, photos, and notes.

Skillet Taco Rice is one owned community recipe you can drop on a weeknight if you want a concrete starting point. The same planner works for recipes you imported yourself.

Rebuild one grocery list from those meals

When the week looks right, rebuild the shopping list from the recipes planned for that week. The list is not a dump of every recipe you have ever saved. It is the ingredients on this week's plan, plus any recipe you explicitly added to the shopping list.

Matching ingredient names are combined onto one line, and the quantities from those recipes are listed together on that line. Lines are grouped into grocery departments such as Produce, Meat & Seafood, and Pantry. Each line remembers the recipe titles it came from. On iPhone, long-press a shopping item to see that recipe context.

Items you already keep in the pantry are marked so you can skip them. If you had already checked an ingredient off, rebuilding the list keeps it checked when that ingredient is still needed. If the week has no meals, rebuilding clears the list instead of leaving last week's groceries behind.

Shop once, then cook

Check items off while you shop. At home, open the recipe from the plan and use cook mode for one step at a time, with the screen able to stay awake. Servings and timing stay on the recipe, so you are cooking the version you saved, not a screenshot of the plan.

Quick checklist

  • Save the recipes you intend to cook before you plan the week.
  • Assign them to real days and meal slots, not a vague list of ideas.
  • Rebuild the shopping list from this week's plan.
  • Check pantry marks before you leave, and check items off in the store.
  • Cook from the recipe in cook mode, not from memory of the aisle.

Common questions

Does the grocery list include every recipe in my library?

No. Rebuilding from the meal plan uses the recipes planned for the current week. You can also add a single recipe to the shopping list on its own. Recipes you have only saved, and not planned or added, stay out of the list.

What happens when two dinners use the same ingredient?

Matching ingredient names are combined onto one shopping line. The quantities are listed together on that line, and the line keeps the titles of the recipes that asked for it so you can see why it is there.

Can I keep an item checked if I update the plan?

Yes. Rebuilding the list keeps the checked state for an ingredient that is still needed. Pantry items are marked separately so you can tell "already at home" from "already in the cart."
